The zoo said that the blue penguin chick weighing in at 56 grams hatched at six in the morning local time on Friday. This day was celebrated the birthdays of David Bowie and Elvis Presley.
While the zoo already has a Royal penguin, bearing the name of the king of rock-n-roll. Therefore, the newborn was called in honor of Bowie. The Director Thane Maynard says the penguin, who became the first newborn pet this year, born just in time – the zoo celebrates penguin days in January and February.
Blue penguins are the smallest of the 17 known species of penguins. They live in Australia, New Zealand and Chile. In nature, penguins live on average 6.5 years, in captivity up to 25 years.
