Meet Koko’s New Kittens

Koko the gorilla has been learning American Sign Language since she was only a year old in 1972. More than 40 years later, she is an ambassador for her species and helps spread awareness about the importance of conservation.

She is also the sweetest, most motherly ape you will ever find, so she was presented with a box of kittens on her birthday and allowed to pick her favorite one to become her own baby. Koko fell in love with Ms. Gray, and Ms. Black fell in love with Koko, so she got to keep both babies!

The way Koko interacts with these kittens is so heartwarming. She’s as gentle as can be and even asks to have Ms. Gray put on top of her head, where the tiny kitten looks around as if she’s on top of the world.

The 280-pound gorilla knows more than 1,000 signs and understands more than 2,000 words of spoken English. She is a true testament to the intelligence of the great apes, and her love of kittens proves she also has a compassionate side.
